Mesothelioma Claims

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer which is more common in men than in women. This is not surprising as mesothelioma can be caused as a result of exposure to asbestos. Although a rare form of cancer, mesothelioma is actually on the increase and is expected to continue rising over the coming years.

If you have been exposed to asbestos in your working life you are at an increased risk of developing mesothelioma. You may have worked with asbestos and think that you have been lucky enough not to contract mesothelioma. Unfortunately, people generally find out that they are suffering from mesothelioma a number of years after the exposure to asbestos. If you are unfortunate enough to suffer from mesothelioma you may be entitled to make a claim for compensation.

So, what is asbestos? How do you know if you have been exposed to asbestos fibres? Asbestos is an insulating material that was often used in the building industry.  Many older buildings may still contain asbestos and therefore people need to be extra vigilant when carrying out any demolition or renovation work.

Asbestos is thought to pose no risk until it is disturbed. There are three main types of asbestos, being blue, brown and white. Blue and brown asbestos is strongly linked to mesothelioma. White asbestos is also thought to be harmful. The use of all asbestos was banned in the UK in 1999. Cases are still on the increase as it is often 15 to 40 years between the exposure to asbestos and a person being diagnosed with mesothelioma.

It is very difficult to state the symptoms of mesothelioma as it is often symptom free in its early stages. It is also said to be difficult to diagnose by the medical profession. Tests used to aid diagnosis include x-rays and CT Scans. A biopsy may also be undertaken; this is known as a fluid and tissue test as the doctors are taking a sample of fluid to test for cancerous cells. Several types of biopsies exist in the mesothelioma diagnostic process.

If you are suffering from mesothelioma it is likely that you have been unknowingly exposed to asbestos either in your working life or through the use of household items. Either way, you may be entitled to make a claim for compensation.
