Preparation for Winter – You and Your Vehicle

The weather in the first week of October was actually better than the summer season in its entirety in my opinion; but unfortunately, the British summertime ends officially at the end of this month.

The nights are rapidly drawing in and there is a chill in the air.  To make matters worse, the rumours that we will experience arctic weather conditions and snow falls before the month is out have already started.

For those of us who use our vehicles regularly, we should already be prepared for the inconvenience of the bad weather; but if you are a new driver you may want to start thinking about how you will cope with this.

Ensure that your car is in good working order – engine, brakes, anti freeze topped up, lights working, and appropriate tyres for the type of weather.

Do not let your petrol tank fall down to the reserve warnings!

Make sure you stock up with de-icer – keeping some in the car and in the house.  On those exceptionally icy mornings you may not be able to get into your car to use the de-icer.

Keep a blanket and or an extra warm coat in the car in the event that you do break down or get caught in a very long traffic jam.  It is also a good idea to:

  • keep boots/good walking shoes in the car in case you get stuck and then have to walk some distance in the bad weather.
  • Keep some sweets in the car; these will help to keep your energy up if you get stranded for any length of time.
  • Plan your journey, listen to the weather forecast and traffic news so as to avoid any areas that are difficult to pass.
  • Allow plenty of time to get to your destination, and travel during daylight if possible.
  • Reduce your speed and look out for other drivers and hazards on the roads and pavements.

If you feel uncomfortable and unsafe driving in severe weather conditions and your journey is not really necessary, don’t drive, and stay at home.

Over the winter period, there are many accidents, not only involving our vehicles in relation to bumps caused by icy roads, but many slips and trips are also increased.

If you are unfortunate enough to be subjected to any incidents such as these and have experienced injury and or losses, financial or other, call The Injury Lawyers for free, no obligation advice on how to discuss whether you have a claim and if so how to proceed claiming compensation.

Keep warm out there and stay safe.
