Paramedics are being warned of the dangers of driverless car accidents and how to take care when assisting injured passengers.

Guidance issued by Waymo – a self-driving technology development company – says that paramedics should keep the door of the vehicle open. If they don’t, the self-driving car may drive off while they’re trying to help injured accident victims.

Further guidance also suggests ways of disabling the vehicle to stop it driving off as well.

Stagecoach self-drive bus tests are set to go ahead in depots as the company makes the move toward autonomous vehicles on UK roads in the near future.

With bus accidents already being a common type of personal injury claim that people need to make, our worries are that the Stagecoach self-drive vehicle move may pave the way for a bigger focus on technology that has already resulted in accidents and fatalities.

Clearly, self-drive technology isn’t ready, but the long-term worry is whether it will ever be truly ready, and what happens to those who fall victim to accidents where the creases of the system are being ironed out.

Given there are clearly a number of outstanding safety issues and concerns over autonomous and self-drive cars, we have done a number of blogs about them in recent weeks and months.

Although there have been several accidents involving self-drive cars so far, we now have the first incident of a pedestrian killed by a self-drive car as well.

A self-drive Uber SUV that was in autonomous mode reportedly struck a 49-year-old woman earlier this week, fatally injuring her. The incident has once against called in to question the safety of self-drive vehicles that our own government are pushing to be on our roads in the next few years.

In the next few years, the government wants autonomous vehicles – including self-driving lorries – on Britain’s roads. The problem is what happens when there is an accident, as well as how accidents can be stopped when a vehicle is essentially being controlled by a potentially fallible computer.

CEO Mark Fields explains level4-capable vehicles to be fully automated: “no steering wheel, no gas pedal, no brake pedal, driver not required.”
