We at The Injury Lawyers write numerous blogs daily, covering an array of stories we find related to personal injury, and of course providing you with the useful information you need when asking the key questions about personal injury claims. As a daily writer, I come across some very unusual stories in the press. And this is another example of an out of the ordinary case of potential negligence that, as a male, is a very concerning to read…

According to sources from The Independent (source), an investigation is underway after a police officer accidentally discharged a Taser weapon in to a man’s groin! How this has happened, I don’t know! The 50,000 volt weapon narrowly missed 46 year old Peter Cox’s genitals after the officer appeared to have inadvertently fired the weapon whilst lowering it. A shocking story – with absolutely no pun intended at all!

Mr Cox has since sought legal advice (and rightly so) after he was pulled over by the officer on suspicion of driving the BMW he was in without insurance. Mr Cox, as any law abiding citizen would, pulled the vehicle to the side of the road near a friend’s house after noticing he was being followed by the patrol car. The officer proceeded to exit the police vehicle and aim the weapon towards him. The officer reportedly pointed the weapon at him for just a few seconds before lowering it and discharging the weapon, hitting his groin and ankle. He subsequently fell to the ground in agony and was later treated by paramedics at the scene.

A lot of people don’t want to call Solicitors as they feel their injuries perhaps aren’t significant or worth a lot of money, when in actual fact it’s likely they are!! Hundreds of people are missing out on thousands of pounds by putting up with their injuries and just simply accepting that “these things happen”. Well, these things shouldn’t happen and you certainly shouldn’t suffer as a result.

An amazing example of this is one woman from America took out a Law Suit against McDonalds after spilling her cup of coffee onto her lap and burning herself. She wanted McDonalds to pay for her medical bills too. When McDonalds offered her $800 she said that this was crazy considering how the coffee was “unreasonably dangerous”. Amazingly, a jury awarded her $2.9 MILLION dollars!!!!! This was appealed and a judged reduced this to $640,000. As a result of this law suit, McDonalds have reduced the temperature of their coffee sold to 60-70 degrees to ensure this is of a “safer temperature”.

I am in no way saying that this ladies injury isn’t significant but just think how much this lady was awarded for a simple spill of coffee. I have spoken to people who have suffered more extensive injuries but don’t feel they should call anyone as their not sure if a claim is there. It’s free to call most reputable Independent Law Firms to see if you are entitled to compensation, so what have you got to lose?

As we all know Social Networking Sites are one of the Internets most trafficked places in order to contact friends, family and to meet new people, but just how many people are aware of the dangers and incidents that these types of sites can and have caused?

As specialist Personal Injury Lawyers we deal with all kinds of Personal Injury claims. One type of claim we deal with is CICA claims, also known as Criminal Injury Compensation Association claims. These types of claims are for victims of assault, shootings, attacks and many other violent acts.

A lot of us don’t realise what kind of issues can be caused by Facebook. A recent story from the Independent reads; “A 16-year-old boy who fatally stabbed a former friend over a “loss of face” after they traded insults on Facebook was detained for at least 14 years today.” source

It’s a big question – and the answer, we say, is yes! But of course it’s always the choice of the individual as to whether they wish to claim for compensation or not.

When it comes down to it, if you are injured in an accident that was not your fault, but the fault of another person or a company, you are normally entitled to claim for compensation. For example – if a driver drives in to the back of your car because they’ve failed to stop in time; you can claim for compensation from them. If you slip in a supermarket because of water on the aisles; you can claim for compensation. If you are injured at work because you were not provided with adequate personal protective equipment; you can claim for compensation.

It’s very common these days for people to go on holiday to get away from it all and take a nice break. What most people don’t expect is for their holiday to turn into a nightmare! If you have had an accident whilst on holiday, that wasn’t your fault, you may wish to think about placing a claim.

A lot of people might not consider the possibilities of placing a claim and sometimes the claims can be a little trickier than normal due to the different law’s that are in place in other countries. However, if you have been on holiday as part of a package deal, it may in fact be easier than you think. For example, if you have had an accident in your hotel or apartment such as slipping on a wet floor or injuring yourself on an unsafe object where no warning signs were in place to alert you of the dangers then the claim would be placed against the package provider.

Toyota has opened itself up to a lot of problems recently with the recall they had on some faulty manufacturing. The ‘Mail Online’ has said that around 270,000 of the petrol electric hybrids may have to be checked. Toyota hasn’t officially stated that they are having a recall but have admitted that the new models have a software problem that is affecting the brakes!

Toyota has already recalled 8 million of their vehicles over fears of faults with the accelerator and the brakes. Obviously, these are the two main components of a car in particular if the brakes don’t work then you’re definitely in trouble!

The first claim made by a driver was back in September. His Solicitor was representing him to win a case where his Toyota had run into a brick wall at 30mph because the brakes wouldn’t work!! Not surprisingly he suffered serious head injuries.

Most of us would go to the Dr and if he told us we were green we would probably believe him as we think they know best. Clearly they didn’t in the case of one girl who will remain unnamed.

The girl was told she had a malignant bone tumour in her right leg and underwent major surgery to remove most of the leg below the knee and had a metal plate fitted in place of this. The metal plate was causing her great discomfort and restriction. An example of this is that she was used to playing tennis as a hobby, she used to enjoy it a great deal but she could no longer play the sport because of the horrific mistake.

To make matters a million times worse! The so called “medical professionals” revealed to her that they were wrong and that she didn’t have any form of cancer and the chemotherapy they had been treating her for and the amputation was all totally unnecessary!

Have you ever been out and about shopping and sadly been caught up in an accident? It’s probably something that you were least expecting to happen but if the accident was in no way your fault then you may want to consider making a claim for compensation.

Any shop that is open to the public has a duty of care to their customers to ensure that their property is of a safe condition. If the accident happened due to unsafe conditions, you may potentially have a claim for compensation. Always take the full circumstances of the incident, try to do this as soon as possible so that everything is still fresh in your mind. Try to think about who you believe is at fault for the accident and if possible take photographs of what caused your accident.

Always seek medical advice after any accident, that way your injuries can be assessed by an expert and you can receive the adequate care and treatment that you may need. If possible take photographs of your injuries, as obviously this is a very clear form of evidence. Your medical records will also be of use in your claim for compensation as they will provide evidence of the injuries which you suffered from.

Every year thousands of people are killed on British roads in road traffic accidents and a new report recently released by ‘The Road Safety Foundation’ has revealed the top ten most dangerous roads in Britain. The report, titled ‘Saving Lives For Less’ covers 28,000 miles of motorways and A-roads and revealed that half of all fatal road crashes occur on just one-tenth of all Britain’s roads.

The most dangerous road in Britain is revealed to be the A537 which runs between Macclesfield in Cheshire, and Buxton in Derbyshire. The road has severe bends, steep falls and is edged by dry stone walls and between 2007 and 2008, 34 people were killed on this road. The most improved road for safety is the A40 between Landover and Carmarthen.

This may sound crazy, but it is 100% true. More than 150 people a day are stabbing themselves when trying to open a ready meal packet or trying to open a stiff food jar using a knife. This was noted by a survey done by ‘Your Magazine’ which gave the questionnaire to more than 20,000 over 50’s.

The problems caused by trying to unwrap food have been referred to as “wrap rage”.

The terrible tea pot cosy- believe it or not, thousands of people have been injured by attempting to pick up the tea pot by the cover rather than by the handle. This has lead to severe burns and scalding.

Even more amazingly the Home Accident Surveillance System last year got figures of 5,310 people being injured whilst putting on their socks, 11,788 people taken to hospital whilst putting on their tights or stockings.
