48 Year Old Attacked With Own Walking Stick

A man was struck with his own walking stick during a robbery at his home in Newcastle.

According to the BBC, the gentleman was attacked by three intruders at his home on Beaconsfield, Newcastle. In addition, the burglars stole jewellery from the house. The incident occurred on Monday evening and the 48 year old suffered minor head injuries following the blow and the incident has been reported to police, who are requesting that anyone with information about the incident contact Northumbria Police.

Depending on the severity of his injuries this gentleman may be entitled to claim compensation via the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (or CICA) .

Who are the CICA?

The CICA describe themselves as ‘a government organisation that can pay compensation to people who have been physically or mentally injured because they were the blameless victim of a violent crime.’

The minimum award of compensation that the CICA will make begins at £1,000. Unfortunately, that means that the injuries which victims suffer must meet a certain threshold in terms of severity for them to qualify for a compensatory payment.

It appears therefore that this gentleman may not be able to make a successful claim through the CICA for compensation for his injuries as from the BBC’s report they appear to be minor.  However, it is important that such a scheme exists to ensure the well being of victims of crime, especially those who suffer more serious injuries, with the CICA able to make payouts of up to £500,000 for injuries in the top bracket.
