Tens of thousands of UK residents choose to have cosmetic surgery every year. The industry is fairly unregulated, as we came to understand from the PIP breast augmentation scandal from 2012. I can understand why some people may want to have a nose job. The nose is one of the most prominent parts of the face, and ultimately an ugly or badly distinguished nose can literally transform a good looking person in to a not so good looking person. It seems obvious that the end result is not always what people are after; cast your memory back to Michael Jackson’s nose, or take a look at Lil’ Kim’s.  But with any cosmetic surgery procedure, things can so easily go wrong.

Here are some classic examples of problems that can be caused by cosmetic surgery negligence:

• Scooped Out Bridge: this normally occurs after reduction surgery, and is caused by the surgeon filing down the bridge of the nose too much. Its worse in men as it can give the appearance of a more feminine nose.
• Nasal Collapse: the narrowest part of the nose collapses due to being weakened from the operation. Aggressive surgery or over-reduction can cause this problem.
• Pollybeak Deformity: causes the appearance of the nose to turn down, which in turn is caused by the surgeon failing to reduce enough cartilage around the tip, or the surgeon being too aggressive when reducing a thick skinned nose. Hence the term beak…
• Distorted Tip: caused by the surgery performed being too aggressive. The tip can end up with too little support and ends up with a distorted appearance. It can also be caused by the surgeon removing too much of the tip when trying to make it narrower.
• Tip Bossae or Knuckling: again caused by surgery being too aggressive when cartilage on the side of the nose becomes deformed and loses its spring. The end result – visible lumps on the nose.
