Compensation for cancer treatment

As one of the most prevalent, life-threatening medical conditions, cancer demands a high quality of care and treatment to ensure that patients have the best chance of a recovery, or lives can be put at risk. An early diagnosis is also vital to ensure that the progression of the disease can be stopped in its tracks. In cases where the opportunity for early diagnosis or treatment is missed, patients may be able to claim compensation for cancer medical negligence cases.

In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, countless appointments, treatments and surgeries related to cancer have been cancelled or rescheduled, producing a knock-on impact on the overall effectiveness of NHS cancer treatment. While priorities may have had to change to meet the demands of controlling the virus, some have raised concerns that the pendulum has swung too far in this direction, potentially causing unnecessary harm to those affected.

Generally speaking, patients may still be well within their rights to make a compensation claim, so we can advise anyone who thinks they may have been affected by medical negligence related to cancer treatment.

Lung Cancer Referrals down 50% due to COVID-19

Cancer Research UK has revealed that lung cancer referrals are said to be down 50% over the last few months due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Fewer patients may be visiting their GP with lung cancer symptoms due to the similar nature of coronavirus symptoms, and this is seen as a cause for concern.

Cancer Research UK is said to be concerned not just about the apparent lack of lung cancer referrals, but also the lack of referrals for all types of cancer. They fear that the Government’s ‘stay home, protect the NHS, save lives’ messaging may have impacted people’s decision-making to visit their GP and, as a result, hindered early diagnosis of cancers and, perhaps, the outcome of treatments.

NHS cancer screening programmes under heavy criticism

NHS cancer screening programmes in the UK have come in for some heavy criticism after MP reviews deem systems as “unfit for purpose”.

It’s understood that there are some 360 different IT systems being used by the NHS for bowel, breast and cervical cancer screening. Some of those systems are 30 years old, and programmes “consistently fail” to hit targets.

This is worrying news that comes a year on from the NHS breast cancer screening scandal of 2018 which saw hundreds of thousands of women miss out on lifesaving check-ups because an IT glitch meant their invitation for screening was never sent. We’re taking legal action over that particular scandal having been approached for help and representation.

Compensation for cancer treatment too late

You may be able to make a medical negligence compensation claim if you receive cancer treatment too late, and this has an impact on your health.

Recent figures have indicated that the NHS is unable to hit their targets when it comes to starting treatment for cancer care in England. As many as a quarter of patients may be receiving treatment after the date they ought to have started treatment by. This is believed to stem from increased pressure from large volumes of patients seeking help, and is also likely linked to funding constraints as well.

We know the devastating impact that receiving cancer treatment too late can have on patients as a law firm who specialise in serious medical negligence cases. Here’s some advice about what to do if you have suffered due to starting your treatment too late.
