cigaretteThree men have been imprisoned after they beat a man into a coma over a cigarette. Mr Martin Brammall was attacked in Stockport in August 2008 after he was asked if he had a cigarette, as he was about to get in to a taxi. According to the court prosecutor, Mr Brammall stated that he did not smoke, to which one of the defendants responded that he was lying and shoved him. Following this all three men began to repeatedly punch and kick the victim, leaving him near to death.

PD*27636654Over 500 people who ate at Heston Blumental’s flagship restaurant suffered food poisoning. A report into the outbreak which occurred at the Fat Duck by the Health Protection Agency, a Michelin- starred restaurant in Berkshire, has indicated that source of the food poisoning was the raw shellfish served was contaminated with human sewage.

nurseryA nursery has been closed for investigation while it undergoes an enquiry following three children who attended suffering fractured limbs. As a result, two people have been arrested by police and a further three are being questioned.

The Rocking Horse Nursery, Plumtree, Nottinghamshire has had its licence suspended while Ofsted look in to the injuries, which have yet to be explained.

nhs-hospitalA woman is furious following a denial of any wrongdoing by the NHS following her father’s treatment and subsequent death in a Devon hospital. Jennifer Leach’s complaint prompted an enquiry in to the treatment of her father, Stan Rogers, after he died at Whipton hospital in 2005.

In April 2008, Devon Primary Care Trust apologised to her for the treatment her father received after he was admitted. After looking in to the complaints, the Healthcare Commission looked at various aspects of his care.

west-ham-unitedFootballer Callum Davenport has been categorised as “stable but progressing” after he was stabbed in both legs after being attacked at his mother’s home in Kempston, Bedfordshire, on Saturday.

Mr Davenport, 26, who plays for premier league club West Ham United, was allegedly attacked by his sister’s boyfriend, Mr Worell Whitehurst, following an argument in the early hours of the morning.

e-coliA nursery in Plymouth has been closed while the source of an E.coli infection is detected.

The Going Places nursery in Springhill Green, Pennycross is being investigated after two children were taken to hospital with E.coli and two children were also recovering at home. The Health Protection Agency has stressed that the closure is only temporary while staff and children are being tested for the disease. The nursery cares for over 100 children and samples have to be taken from the children and staff.

breast-cancer-drugA scare has broken out over the breast cancer drug tamoxifen, with women being advised that the drug may, in certain circumstances, be responsible for an increased risk of secondary tumours. Medical charities have moved to play down the concerns but, according to the guardian website, US research has indicated that those using tamoxifen for a period of five years were more vulnerable to developing more aggressive tumours, as opposed to those which require oestrogen, which tamoxifen targets.

Indeed, it is recognised as Britain’s top tourist attraction, attracting nearly six million visitors a year. However, it wasn’t so much fun for some visitors on Tuesday evening.  Over 30 people suffered injuries after a collision on one of the theme park’s most famous rollercoaster rides, the Big Dipper. According to the BBC website, one of the carriages became jammed on the rails and as a direct consequence of this the second carriage, which had continued as normal, slammed into the back of the first carriage.

gas-leak-detectorFour people have been taken to hospital following what police suspect to be a carbon monoxide leak. The Nationwide Building Society in Bushbury, Wolverhampton was evacuated after the people became ill around midday. In addition to the four people taken to hospital, a further two people made their own way there.

Early investigations in to what caused the onrush of ill customers has been inconclusive.  According to the BBC, the branch have been given the all clear and will reopen on Wednesday and a spokeswoman for Nationwide confirmed  that there was “no evidence of any gas leaking in to the branch,  or any other environmental issues at the branch.”

laser-torch-beamThe Civil Aviation Authority has expressed considerable concern over the number of incidents involving laser torches being shone at aircrafts. According to their figures, The CAA claims that the number of incidents involving lasers rose from 29 in 2007 to 206 in 2008. The question to be asked is why does this cause a problem?

Apparently if a beam is shone directly in to a cockpit, the thousands of scratches on a windshield mean that the concentration of light is refracted, temporarily blinding pilots by causing windshields to light up.
