Furness Maternity Ward and Morecambe Bay NHS Investigation – lessons about who you should turn to

When tragedies happen we look for answers – it’s entirely common and wholly understandable. But when our complaints and questions either go unanswered or we do not get the replies that we feel are fair, who do we turn to?

The Morecambe Bay Report was suggests from the start that complainants felt that they were not being treated fairly or that there was a potential cover up. Read on for information about who you should turn to and what you need to know about complaints with the NHS.

The Parliamentary report suggested that earlier reports either executed or commissioned by the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust were inadequate whether intentionally or by coincidence, based on the information from complainants. Reports were said to be littered with errors, and statements from staff were alleged to be full of contradictions. It was suggested that external reports were commissioned by ‘friends’ of the hospital which would lead anyone to naturally think there is a cover up.

It’s clear that lessons were not learned, and the parliamentary report found a litany of errors that resulted in the deaths of several infants and mothers. So if you find yourself in a position where something has happened and you are not getting the answers you feel you deserve, who do you turn to? Is this normal? What can you do?
