‘Angry, upset, and gutted’ – how our Daybrook clients feel to the news they’ve been potentially exposed to HIV and Hepatitis

We’re writing a lot about our clients experiences as former patients of the ‘dirty dentist’ at the heart of the Daybrook Dental Surgery scandal. D’Mello has potentially exposed 22,000 people to serious blood-borne infections through ignoring important NHS infection control procedures.

The news of the fall of a man who has been described as a ‘pillar of the community’ has hit many people really hard – hundreds of our clients who were former patients have expressed their upset about what has happened.

‘Anger’ and ‘Disappointment’

Many are angry that, not only they have been exposed to serious infection risks, but their families – including children – have also been exposed. A lot of the former patients our specialist Daybrook Dental Negligence Team are representing have said how angry they are that their children and loved ones have been exposed to all of this.

It isn’t just about the fact they have been exposed to serious infection, but it’s also about the stress caused by having to take them to get tested.

Its ‘horrendous’ as many have described it, and we totally agree.

‘Hurt’ at the ‘breach of trust’

D’Mello has been described as a well liked man by the majority of the victims we’re acting for, and many of the former patients we are helping have said how much he made them feel at ease, and how nice and friendly he was. Many have said he was more of a friend than a dentist.

All this has caused serious hurt and aguish at the breach of trust people had placed in him. Many feel like they have been betrayed by a friend, and this has only served to exacerbate the stress and anxiety of the whole situation.

‘Gutted’

Many have said how ‘gutted’ they are that it has come to this. Some have even said that they feel sorry for him despite the fact he has placed their own health at risk.

I guess this just goes to show just how much he was liked and respected by people, and as I’ve said earlier, this has only made the whole situation worse. He made his patients feel at ease and in safe hands, when in reality, he was operating a ‘conveyer belt’ density practice where he was seemingly taking too much work on.

One of the biggest theories so far as to why he chose to ignore such basic protocol was to keep the flow of patients high and see as many people as he could. We can only speculate why this is so, but many believe it is down to putting profits before patients…
