Gas Explosion

A gas explosion is some kind of explosion which may result from a gas leak in the presence of an ignition source.  Explosive gasses include methane and propane to name just a couple.

The BP oil disaster was caused by a methane bubble which triggered the explosion. The deadly bubble of methane forced its way up from beneath the ocean floor and caused the explosion in the Gulf of Mexico, according to workers who survived the disaster. The disaster itself caused severe consequences with 11 deaths and more than three million gallons of crude oil pouring into the sea. Such a disaster highlights the dangers of a gas explosion.

Of course we should be well aware of the dangers anyway as the BP oil disaster was certainly not the first disaster of its kind. Many people will recall the Cleveland East Ohio gas explosion which occurred back in 1944. The gas leak, explosion and resulting fires killed an estimated 130 people and destroyed one square mile area on Cleveland, Ohio’s east side.

A gas explosion can occur quite easily and therefore extreme regulations are required. A small but simple leak and a trigger is all that is required. The consequences, as documented above by the BP oil disaster and the Cleveland East Ohio gas explosion, can be catastrophic.

The resulting inquests often find that the gas explosion was “entirely preventable”. Gas lines are of course commonplace among residential communities and businesses. Most of us rely on gas in one form or other. Most of us simply assume that gas lines have been properly installed and are properly maintained and replaced where necessary. If a gas line becomes corroded or ruptured, the consequences are likely to be severe, death is a real possibility.

There are certain pointers which should be noted to prevent gas leaks. Gas pipes are better to run outside rather than inside whenever possible, if gas pipes have to run in an enclosed space then a gas leak detection system should be installed. The detection system should be equipped with sensors, an alarm and an automatic gas shut off valve. When gas pipes have to run in an enclosed area an extraction fan should also be installed so that the area is fully ventilated. In addition pipes should be checked regularly by a suitably qualified and experienced person. It is said that most gas leaks occur at pipe joints so always ensure that the correct jointing method is used. It goes without saying that gas installations should always be approved by the correct operatives such as “CORGI” and now “Gas Safe”.

Gas explosions are nearly always preventable. However, the longer a gas leak goes undetected the more chance there is of a trigger causing an explosion. Therefore regular checks and maintenance is essential. As we have seen in the past, when a gas explosion does occur, the consequences can be catastrophic.
