Risk of explosion identified in ZeniPower hearing aid batteries

A medical device alert has been issued by the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency (MHRA) for ZeniPower mercury-free batteries manufactured by Zhuhai Zhi Li Battery Co Ltd.

The affected batteries are said to cause a “low risk” of explosion due to excessive gassing causing the battery to expand and then possibly explode as the zinc electrodes react with the electrolyte to generate hydrogen.

The affected batteries are said to be those with “best before” dates of “08-2018” and “09-2018.”

A list of those affected is as follows:

  • R44 zinc air size 675 for cochlear implants (product code: A675P MF)
  • R44 zinc air size 675 (product code: A675 MF)
  • R48 zinc air size 13 (product code: A13 MF)
  • R41 zinc air size 312 (product code: A312 MF)
  • R70 zinc air size 10 (product code: A10 MF)

It goes without saying that this is a serious issue.

Although they are suggesting that instances where batteries may explode are rare, it doesn’t change the fact that they can explode. Until all affected products are effectively recalled, people’s health and lives are in danger.
