Bethany Storro, was in Vancouver, Washington at the time the attack took place. She was about to enter her local Starbucks coffee shop as a female stranger approached her and threw liquid in her direction.
The liquid, which Doctors say they believe was a form of acid ripped straight through the clothes of the 28-year-old victim, causing the skin it touched to burn away.
She is now recovering in the burns unit at a hospital in Portland, Oregon, where she held her first press conference.
Ms Storro vowed that she would not let the attackers ruin her life, she even joked about the possibility of losing her sight.
She revealed that she had spinal meningitis twice as a child which had robbed her of her hearing, and said: “Oh my gosh, to be hard of hearing and blind? That would drive them nuts”, referring to her parents.
When talking about the attacker she said: “I have never, ever seen this girl in my entire life. When I first saw her she had this weirdness about her – like jealously rage.”
Heavily bandaged after her operation, and accompanied by her mother and father, Nancy and Joe Neuwelt, she told reporters: “It was the most painful thing ever. My heart stopped. It ripped through my clothing the instant it touched my shirt. I could feel it burning through the second layer of my skin.”
Mother Nancy told reporters that she believed her daughters eye sight could have been lost if it wasn’t for the pair of sun glasses she was wearing, that she bought only hours earlier. She referred to it as the ‘hand of God, protecting her eyes.’
A Vancouver police spokeswoman said that doctors and authorities are trying to determine what kind of substance it was that caused this, and are still looking for the attacker.
