Advice about the Bard mesh recall

You may have heard about the Bard mesh recall that has been initiated this month, together with the announcement that the company is ceasing its mesh operations in Europe.

C.R. Bard (Becton, Dickinson and Company (BD)) announced the recall together with confirmation that they’re no longer producing and distributing vaginal mesh in European markets to treat POP (pelvic organ prolapse) and SUI (stress urinary incontinence).

Steps have been issued for those in the healthcare industry to follow in order to quarantine any remaining products. A patient information leaflet has also reportedly been distributed.

What do patients need to do about the Bard mesh recall?

It’s understood that there are no immediate steps that patients need to take if they’re affected by the Bard mesh recall. Unless there’s a medical requirement, it’s understood that patients do not have to have any additional follow-up care or treatment. Revision surgery is not being pursued as a direct result of the recall itself as well, although it may be required if any device fails.

It appears that the company’s decision to pull the device from the market and cease production in Europe relates to no longer investing resources to meet additional EU requirements.

Legal advice about the Bard mesh recall

The guidance issued by the manufacturer in the wake of the Bard mesh recall is that there’s no need for further treatment or action for patients.

However, we know from experience that many women can suffer with complications arising from having had mesh devices fitted. Our advice is that women should always seek medical advice if something’s wrong. If the device has failed and further surgery is required, or isn’t possible, there may be a claim for personal injury compensation to make. That can apply for any woman and any mesh device fitted for residents in England and Wales.
