Cars that know when your ‘drunk behind the wheel’

Japanese car makers Toyota and Nissan are currently developing concept cars that can sense when you have had a drink and then try to drive your car. The automobile giants are focusing on the new anti-drunk technology due to the increase in road traffic accidents caused by over-the-limit drivers behind the wheel.

Space age technology

The new concept cars are fitted with sweat sensors on the steering wheel that can detect the amount of alcohol in your body; sense abnormal steering and have embedded cameras in the dashboard that detect if your eyes are not in focus.

Advancements in technology and also the rising yearly figures of fatalities and injuries involving drunk drivers on our roads has seen the need for these concept cars to become a reality.

Education is required

Road safety awareness groups will tell you that binge drinking and care-free attitudes among the young alongside officers relying more on speed cameras to keep our roads safe make for a dangerous environment.

When you consider that a quarter of all convictions for drink driving in the U.K. are aged between 17 – 24 and won’t be able to afford these concept cars once made available to the public then you begin to understand that education is the key.
