{"id":8625,"date":"2011-09-22T08:56:37","date_gmt":"2011-09-22T07:56:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theinjurylawyers.co.uk\/injury-lawyers-blog\/?p=8625"},"modified":"2011-09-22T08:56:37","modified_gmt":"2011-09-22T07:56:37","slug":"manual-handling-regulations-1992","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theinjurylawyers.co.uk\/injury-lawyers-blog\/2011\/09\/22\/manual-handling-regulations-1992\/","title":{"rendered":"Manual Handling Regulations 1992"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.theinjurylawyers.co.uk\/injury-lawyers-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/manual-handling-accidents-257x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"manual-handling\" width=\"257\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-8629\" \/>Many of us lift things within the work place without even thinking about the consequences &#8211; <strong>this may result in injuries such as repetitive strains on our bodies<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In the rules there is no specific <strong>maximum weight that a person can lift at work<\/strong>.\u00a0 This makes sense as we are all different individuals and the levels that we can push ourselves to vary from person to person.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ergonomics <\/strong>is described as <em>\u2018fitting the job to the person and not the person to the job\u2019.<\/em><br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nThe Manual Handling Regulations 1992 does not take the ergonomics approach as this may lead to incorrect conclusions; therefore, an ergonomic assessment is carried out based on a range of relevant factors used to determine the risk of injury.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The regulations establish clear control measures to assist with the assessment.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Avoid hazardous manual handling operations in a reasonably and practicable fashion.\u00a0 Amend the task to avoid moving the load or mechanise the process.<\/li>\n<li>Ensure that a thorough assessment of all hazardous manual handling is carried out where the task cannot be avoided.<\/li>\n<li>Reduce the risk of injury from the task as is reasonably possible; this may include reducing the load, amending the task, or the working environment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The risk of injury from a manual handling task will be increased where the workers <strong>do not have the relevant information<\/strong> or <strong>training to enable them to work safely<\/strong>. It is therefore imperative that employers ensure that their staff are correctly trained and mechanical aids are available.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the provision of training and information alone will not ensure safe manual handling.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The most common type of occupational ill health in the UK is work related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), which include manual handling injuries.\u00a0 Not all MSDs can be prevented; so any symptoms should be reported as soon as possible &#8211; proper treatment and rehabilitation is essential.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Have you suffered an injury<\/strong>? You should have in the first instance reported this to your employer and visited your GP for a check up.\u00a0 The injury may have caused you to have time off work, possibly without pay.
