According to news from The Guardian (http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/money\/2011\/jun\/28\/minister-criticises-referral-fees-personal-injury-claims<\/a>), Justice Minister Jonathan Djanogly has openly criticised the practice of referral fees<\/em><\/strong> following Jack Straw\u2019s investigations that have hit out at insurance companies selling the details of accident victims to personal injury lawyers for profit. You know those times when the insurers hit out and blame accident claims for increasing premiums? Well, with potentially 80% of the market for road accidents going through insurers referral systems, insurers only have themselves to blame for increasing premiums <\/em><\/strong>as its the insurers themselves that are selling the details to claims companies.<\/p>\n

Reports suggest that the practice can generate around \u00a33bn a year, and increases the premiums for car insurance policies; so we shouldn\u2019t be feeling sorry for them when they are complaining that their profits are being dented by claims when they are the primary instigators of making it happen!<\/p>\n

The Law Society, Jack Straw, and Lord Justice Jackson, and now even the insurance industry agrees they should be banned, according to the recent reports. Linda Lee, Law Society President, has commented the following: “Referral fees hinder access to justice<\/em>, contribute to rising costs in the justice system, and go against the interests of the consumer<\/em>. We have always argued for a total ban on referral fees<\/em><\/strong>. Jack Straw believes they should be banned, Lord Justice Jackson in his recent report on costs believes they should be banned, and now even the insurance industry agrees they should be banned. The government needs to wake up and take immediate action.”<\/p>\n
