Unfortunately, drivers can often be negligent and accidents occur; and a claim can be brought against them. But when an accident is caused because of the <strong><em>drivers\u2019 selfishness and recklessness<\/em><\/strong>, it\u2019s an altogether different story.<\/p>\n<p>According to sources from The Sun (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/sol\/homepage\/news\/3042114\/Maniac-in-a-stolen-car-who-killed-a-woman-of-70-as-cops-chased-him-was-caged-yesterday-for-11-years.html\">source<\/a>), a <strong><em>\u201cmaniac\u201d driver who stole a car and killed a 70 year old pensioner by driving on to a pavement to avoid a police box manoeuvre as he was being chased by officers has been given an 11 year jail sentence<\/em><\/strong> for his criminal act. In my opinion, this is hardly a punishment that fits the crime, if I am to be perfectly honest.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The reckless driving that has cost the life an innocent elderly lady was witnessed and captured on film by police helicopter CCTV footage, which showed the <strong><em>car careering on to the pavement at more than 100mph<\/em><\/strong>, narrowly missing a man with a zimmer frame also on the pavement. He reportedly drove off from the scene after \u201c<strong><em>catapulting\u201d the victim, Joanna Hakesley, in to the air<\/em><\/strong> following the collision. The driver, 26 year old Len Jones, has a \u201cviolent and criminal history\u201d, and has <strong><em>\u201cshown no remorse\u201d<\/em><\/strong> at the consequence of his selfish act. He <strong><em>admitted to manslaughter without emotion<\/em><\/strong> at Lewis Crown Court.<\/p>\n<p>This is of course no regular road traffic accident; this is not just a case of a driver losing attention for a second and negligently colliding with the rear of another driver. This is a reckless act that the driver took in a selfish attempt to save himself from capture by the police. It has tragically cost the life of an innocent elderly lady.<\/p>\n<p>In this instance, the driver is rather obviously at fault for the incident, and liable for any suffering caused. This type of incident highlights the clear danger motor cars can be to people on the highways.
