Warmer weather leads to higher rates of bike accident claims

Well OK – the weather has been a little hit and miss so far and we’re yet to see the best of the summer break through. But as the weather gets warmer, the number of bike accidents tends to rise as the bikers come out from their winter hibernation and get back out on the roads.

It’s a serious problem. Drivers ought to know the rules of the road and should always be scanning ahead and looking out for vehicles and pedestrians. Yes, bikers are harder to spot – but that’s no excuse when it comes to negligence on the road.

We take on and win a lot of claims for injured bikers and we see the devastating effects that accidents have on them. Without the protection that a car offers, bikers are exposed to the most brutal of injuries even when they are wearing full protective gear. We have all seen the adverts and we know our duties when it comes to watching out for bikes, but sadly we still see a lot of serious bike accidents.

We always see the same sorts of accidents:

  • Junctions – where people are not looking and pull out in to the path of a biker
  • Turning right in to new road – and not checking for an oncoming bike
  • U turns in the road – also not checking for oncoming or overtaking traffic
  • Changing lanes on motorways and dual carriageways – especially those impatient drivers stuck in traffic who fail to check their mirrors properly when they accelerate hard to move lanes

The above are just some of the commons scenarios where the biker is often entirely blameless and is injured through the negligence of the other driver. You have the legal right to make a claim for personal injury compensation where you are injured through no fault of your own in a bike accident.
