Beat Knee Claims
Posted on May 26th, 2009 in Claims by Ian Johnstone
What is ‘Beat knee’?
It is a joint disease. It is osteoarthritis of the knee. A bursitis (inflammation of small sacs of fluid) develops below or underneath the kneecap as a result of severe or prolonged pressure on the knee, wearing away at the cartilage. This causes the joint to degenerate.
Who does it affect?
The injury is also known as ‘Miner’s knee’ so, as you might guess, it is people who have spent several years working underground who are most likely to have suffered from the disease. This can be caused by working in repetitive cramped working conditions for long periods and inappropriate health and safety measures having being taken to protect the health of workers.
Possible symptoms
According to www.direct.gov.uk symptoms of beat knee include:
· Pain
· Swelling
· Stiffness
· Reduced Mobility
· Inflammation
· Tenderness
· Locking of the knee
The pain is most likely to be a sharp ache or burning sensation.
Compensation
As of this summer the Industrial Injuries Advisory Council will add the injury to their list of prescribed diseases which come under Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit and former miners will be able to make a claim if they worked for a period of over ten tears. It is thought that up 10,000 ex-miners will be eligible as a result.
